AirTrain JFK explained — how it works and what it costs
AirTrain JFK is the automated light-rail system connecting all JFK terminals to the LIRR (Jamaica Station) and subway (Howard Beach and Jamaica). It costs $8.50 (€8) and runs 24/7 every 4–12 minutes. AirTrain is free between terminals — you only pay when exiting at Jamaica or Howard Beach. From Jamaica, LIRR trains reach Grand Central in 20 minutes (additional $5–10).
Key facts
How AirTrain works
AirTrain has three routes: the Jamaica Line (red — to Jamaica Station for LIRR connections), the Howard Beach Line (green — to Howard Beach for A subway), and the All Terminals Loop (gold — circles all terminals). The system is fully automated with clear signage in multiple languages. Trains run on elevated tracks with views of the airport and Queens.
Connecting to the city
At Jamaica Station, transfer to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) for Grand Central (20 min), Penn Station (20 min), or Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn (20 min). LIRR tickets cost $5–10 depending on destination. At Howard Beach, transfer to the A subway — cheaper ($2.90) but slower (50+ min to Midtown). For most travellers, the LIRR connection at Jamaica is the best option.
